Insulation & attic
A Phoenix attic in July is the hottest room in the house, and it sits right on top of all the others. We're up there for every roof inspection, so we see how much insulation is actually left and whether the attic can breathe.
What we look for
- Low or missing insulation, settled, packed down, or never there to begin with.
- Poor ventilation, an attic with no real path for hot air to leave.
- Excessive attic heat, which the AC pays for all afternoon.
- Duct insulation issues, torn or missing wrap on duct running through the hottest air in the house.
- Air leakage from the living space into the attic, around lights, fans and the attic hatch.
The Attic Efficiency Package
Insulation
Topping up or replacing what has settled or gone missing.
Radiant barrier
Reflecting heat off the underside of the roof deck before it reaches the attic floor.
Air sealing
Closing the gaps that let cooled air leak up out of the house.
Ventilation & attic fan
Balanced intake and exhaust so the attic can shed heat, with an attic fan where the roof needs the help.
Ventilation is a roof issue too
An attic that can't breathe cooks the roof from underneath. On a shingle roof, poor ventilation is one of the biggest reasons shingles age early, and it's one of the first things a manufacturer looks at on a warranty claim. Fixing it during a re-roof is the easiest time there is, because the vents are being cut and flashed anyway.
Questions we get asked
How much will this lower my power bill?
It depends on what's in your attic now and how the house is cooled, so we won't put a figure on it here. We'll show you what we found and what we'd change.
Can you do the attic without doing the roof?
Yes. It is a stand-alone job.
Do I need all four parts of the package?
No. We'll recommend what your attic actually needs, which may be one of them.
