Storm damage & insurance claims

Wind, hail, or a monsoon microburst can leave damage you can see from the driveway and damage you can't. Here's exactly what to do today, in order, and a straight account of how a claim actually runs.

What to do right now

Document

Photograph everything you can safely see from the ground. The roof, gutters, downspouts, dented AC unit or vents, siding, and any water or staining inside, before anything gets cleaned up or covered.

Stay off the roof

Storm damage isn't worth a fall. Protecting the inside of the house. Catching water, moving what's underneath it. Doesn't require going up top, and neither does the documentation above.

Call your insurer

Open the claim while the damage is still fresh and the date is clearly tied to the storm. A claim opened weeks later invites more questions than one opened the same week.

Get us on the roof

Call us and we'll inspect before or alongside your adjuster. Same measurements, same eyes, so there's no gap between what they saw and what we quote.

What actually counts as storm damage

Hail typically leaves impact marks or granule loss in a scattered, roof-wide pattern rather than one spot. Wind shows up as lifted, creased, or missing shingles, cracked or displaced tile, or torn flashing and coating, usually concentrated on whichever plane faced the storm.

Ordinary wear looks different: gradual granule loss at the drip edge, uniform fading, or tile aging evenly across the whole roof. Not everything that looks bad the morning after a storm is storm damage, and we'll tell you honestly which one we're looking at rather than write up wear as an event just because a storm happened to pass through that week.

What 'we'll meet your adjuster on the roof' actually means

We don't work for your insurance company, and we're not there to negotiate on its behalf. We walk the roof, document what we find, and give the adjuster the same measurements and photos we'd give you, so the conversation is about what's actually up there, not about who saw what first.

What we can't do is promise a claim outcome. Coverage decisions belong to your carrier, not to us, and not every case of storm damage meets the bar a policy sets. A denied claim can also affect your policy going forward, so filing one is a decision worth making with real information, not just because a roofer suggested it.

If a claim comes back denied or short and you want someone to dispute it for you, read denied or underpaid roof claims.

Questions we get asked

Will my claim be approved?

We can't promise that. That decision belongs to your carrier, and it depends on your specific policy and what the damage turns out to be. What we can do is document what we find honestly and give you a straight read on whether it looks like storm damage or ordinary wear.

What if the adjuster and you see it differently?

It happens. We'll show you exactly what we documented and why, and you're free to request a re-inspection through your carrier if you think something was missed. We won't tell you a denied claim is a mistake just because it's the answer you didn't want.

Should I check the roof myself before you get there?

Look from the ground and take photos if it's safe. Don't go up. A roof after a storm can hide loose tile or a soft deck you won't see coming, and the documentation that matters most is easy to get without climbing anything.

Is there a deadline for filing a claim?

Most policies set some kind of filing window, but it varies by carrier and policy. Check yours, or call us and we'll help you find the answer rather than guess at a number that might not match your coverage.
